Let the [plastic] games begin

Gold, silver, and bronze will be the most-sought after materials in London from July 27 through August 12, but to bring home those precious metals/medals many of the estimated 10,500 athletes who converge on the Britain's capital will rely on plastics.
From playing surfaces and equipment to uniforms, architecture, and more, plastics will be prominent throughout the upcoming Games of the XXX Olympiadand PlasticsToday will spotlight the synthetic material's role in the various competition's and elsewhere. That includes whether it's some of the innovative, vinyl-clad temporary venues or in the packaging and service ware used to feed the estimated 11 million visitors at an event, which is aiming for Zero-Waste.
London was awarded the games after four rounds of voting by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), edging out Paris in the final tally almost seven years ago to the date at the 117th IOC Session in Singapore. Other finalists included New York, Moscow, and Madrid.

London 2012 by the numbers:
  •    - 26 Olympic sports in 34 venues
  •    - 20 Paralympic sports in 21 venues
  •    - 10,500 Olympic athletes and 4,200 Paralympic athletes
  •    - 20,000 press and media 
  •    - More than 9 million tickets
